NECBS 2022 Conference Information

An announcement from Prof. Caroline Shaw, our Past-President and Local Arrangements coordinator for the 2022 edition of the Northeast Conference on British Studies.

Dear NECBS community!

My colleagues and I are delighted to be welcoming you to Bates for the 2022 NECBS conference, our first in-person conference since 2019. As you know, we will have hybrid sessions, as well.

With many thanks to Brian Lewis and Jennifer Regan-Lefebvre, the program looks excellent, with a wide range of papers, as well as plenary addresses from Meleisa Ono-George (Oxford) and Paul Deslandes (University of Vermont)

You will find detailed information about the conference below.

Please feel free to reach out to me (cshaw@bates.edu) with local arrangement questions or NECBS President Brian Lewis (brian.lewis@mcgill.ca) with any questions about the program or NECBS itself.

Sincerely,

Caroline Shaw

NECBS Local Arrangements, past-President

NECBS 2022 Conference Details

PROGRAM: Attached to this email you will find our draft conference program. Participants, please be in touch with Brian Lewis (brian.lewis@mcgill.ca) if you have questions. We will send Zoom links for the hybrid sessions and the plenary addresses in early October.

REGISTRATION: Registration for the conference is now open via this link! Regular registration will remain open through Tuesday, September 20. 2022 Registration Fees: $110 for In-Person attendees; $70 for virtual attendees; and $50 in-person or virtual for graduate students, retirees, and those who are un/under-employed.

LATE REGISTRATION: Registration will remain possible between September 21 and October 1st, with the late-registration fees set at $125 for in-person attendees; $85 for virtual attendees; and $60 for graduate students attending in-person or virtually.

GRADUATE STUDENTS: Graduate students interested in applying for travel and/or registration assistance to the conference, please contact Jen Purcell (jpurcell@smcvt.edu

IN-PERSON CONFERENCE ATTENDEES:

COVID-19 POLICIES: We will follow Bates College’s COVID-19 policies. At present, these allow for optional outdoor and indoor masking; the policies also require visitors to show proof either of vaccination and booster or of a negative COVID test (taken within 48 hours of arrival). While these remain subject to change, you will find up-to-date campus visitor policies here. We will ask for documentation – vaccination card or test results – at the registration check in. To streamline that process, you will find an option to upload a photo of your vaccination card on our registration site.

LODGING: NECBS has a hotel block reserved at the Hampton Inn in Lewiston, Maine, just a few minutes drive from campus and within easy walking distance of restaurants, breweries, and cafes in downtown Lewiston. The block will remain available at the conference rate of $199/night until Tuesday, September 20. There are additional hotels and a few AirBnBs in Lewiston and its twin city, Auburn. As the conference takes place during peak fall foliage season, we recommend securing your accommodations earlier rather than later.

PARKING/CARPOOLING: For those of you driving to the conference, both the Hampton Inn and Bates College have free visitor parking, in addition to ample street parking near the college, too. (Local maps and details to follow in early October.)

If you are willing to carpool with other conference attendees, please email Caroline Shaw by September 1 (cshaw@bates.edu), with a note about your travel route and the number of passengers you could drive. With any luck, we will be able to reduce the number of cars on the road for the conference. We will email conference participants a list of potential carpools by September 10.

For those of you arriving by bus, train, or air, Lewiston is approximately 45 minutes from the Portland transportation hubs. We will run vans between Portland and the Hampton Inn, as well as between the hotel and Bates College. You will find a place to register for the shuttle within the registration link. The shuttle times are listed below as well. You can also register for the shuttle after registering for the conference using this link here. This separate shuttle signup page will remain live through October 20; however, we strongly encourage you to sign up by the September 20 conference registration deadline so that we can adjust the number of vans/drivers accordingly. The shuttle between the hotel and campus is complimentary. The shuttle to/from Portland is $25 each way.
