“Women, Patriarchy, and the Covenanting Movement”

The history of female protest in Scotland during the mid-seventeenth century demonstrates a paradox at the heart of the covenanting movement: within it existed the seeds of transformative potential for Scots of all sorts, but at the same time, it ultimately reinforced structures of patriarchal authority. This talk explores the gendered dynamics of covenanting, building upon extant work and offering new paths of inquiry. It also encourages scholars to further integrate the experiences of women—and issues of gender more broadly—into our understanding of the Scottish Revolution and its long legacy.
